WHAT IS ENAMELED COPPER?

Enameling is glass fused to copper at high heat. Enamels are finely ground glass, like fine sand, also referred to as vitreous enamel. Enameled copper has a durable, glossy finish that doesn’t fade under ultraviolet light. Enamels may be opaque or transparent, the colors come from the use of various oxides. Enameled surface is durable and has a variety of color effects depending on angle of light.
The pieces are torch fired, either by holding with a steel rod or by using a trivet on a stand. Several layers of enamel need to be applied one at a time to produce a thick enough finish. Large pieces have to be fired one side at a time. You can also melt metal wire, thin enamel sticks or crushed glass on your pieces at this point. This is where the real creativity happens!
Enameled jewelry can be cleaned with water and a mild detergent if needed. Please do not drop onto a hard surface like tile or cement as this may cause chipping just like if you dropped a piece of glass jewelry.
