I handcraft the enamel jewelry in my studio. There is a lot of sanding and torching involved! The items are fired with a torch using the dipping and dangling method with several layers of enamel, one at a time. It is a careful process and requires a steady hand! I handcraft the earwires out of jewelry grade (surgical) stainless steel wire.
WHAT IS ENAMELED COPPER?
Enameling is glass fused to copper at high heat. Enamels are finely ground glass, like fine sand, also referred to as vitreous enamel. Enameled copper has a durable, glossy finish that doesn’t fade under ultraviolet light. Enamels may be opaque or transparent, the colors come from the use of various oxides. Enameled surface is durable and has a variety of color effects depending on angle of light.
Enameled jewelry can be cleaned with water and a mild detergent if needed. Please do not drop onto a hard surface like tile or cement as this may cause chipping just like if you dropped a piece of glass jewelry.
MURRINI (MURRINE) GLASS
Murrine (singular: murrina) are colored patterns or images made in a glass cane that are revealed when the cane is cut into thin cross-sections. Murrine production first appeared in the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago and was revived by Venetian glassmakers on Murano in the early 16th century.
