Copper and Brass Modernist Earrings

These handcrafted earrings start with pure copper and brass. The shapes are handcut and soldered together, the cabochon sits in a round copper bezel setting.

Size of the Iolite cabochon is 4mm. The metal is not coated with any type of clear coat and will normally tarnish. If you would like the metals coated please send a message (curing requires an extra 3 days before the jewelry can be shipped).

(Please note, pure copper is a softer metal, so the earwires are not as springy and/or can bend easier.)

IOLITE

Iolite is known as the Viking stone. It was used to determine the position of the sun on a cloudy day. It has an optical property called pleochroism, meaning the stone takes on a completely different color depending on the direction of whatever light is illuminating it. Even on a cloudy day, light always comes from the actual direction of the sun. So the sailor could find the sun’s position by positioning the stone at various angles until the right color appeared, and by knowing where the sun was, he could figure out his own position and direction.
